Can Bluetooth Make Theater More Accessible? WYO Says Yes with Auri Install

The WYO Performing Arts & Education Center in Sheridan, Wyoming, has installed Auri, a Bluetooth-based assistive listening system powered by Listen Technologies and Ampetronic, in its Main Stage theater, known as Sophie’s Stage.

The historic venue, originally opened in 1923, features two theaters and several flexible-use spaces. Accessibility remains a key part of the WYO’s mission to inspire, educate, and entertain. Its accessibility committee continually evaluates new ways to create an inclusive experience for all audience members.

Auri complements the venue’s existing hearing loop system by expanding options for guests who need assistive listening. The system uses Auracast broadcast audio, a new feature of Bluetooth technology that transmits high-quality, low-latency sound to an unlimited number of compatible devices within range.

The Auri setup includes transmitters, receivers, docking stations, Manager Software, and accessories. A low-profile transmitter—similar in appearance to a Wi-Fi access point—has been installed at the WYO to connect to audio sources like microphones and speakers and broadcast sound throughout the venue.

Guests with Auracast-compatible hearing aids, earbuds, headphones, or smartphones can access the venue’s live audio directly through their own device. For those without a compatible device, the WYO offers a limited number of Auri receivers for guests to borrow. These receivers support earbuds or headphones, and filter out background noise to improve clarity. Neck loops are also available for users with telecoil-equipped hearing aids or cochlear implants.

In addition to assistive listening, Auri can be used to deliver audio descriptions for visually impaired guests and support language interpretation services.

“The WYO is committed to making the performing arts and education accessible. We have fabulous performances planned and are excited to begin the next season with the Auri system installed. Auri offers guests another way to access assistive listening within the theater. As Auracast-compatible devices become more prevalent, the WYO will be future-ready with Auri,” said Erin Butler, executive director, the WYO.

To introduce guests to the Auri system and demonstrate the hearing assistance options available at the theater, the WYO will host a reception on Thursday, September 25, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The reception, titled “Experience Better Sound at the WYO,” will precede the evening’s planned performance by the Dallas String Quartet.

“We want to ensure guests of the WYO are aware of the assistive listening systems available and utilize them to optimize their theater experience,” added Butler.
