Indiana State University created a dedicated esports lab in Jones Hall to support competitive and recreational gaming as student interest in esports grew. The project included upgrades to the existing AV and network infrastructure as the university converted a dorm lounge into the new space.
The lab includes 25 gaming PCs, three gaming consoles and a dedicated production desk for broadcasting and streaming. Wheelchair-accessible desks are also included, and ISU uses a card swipe system to track use of the space and student engagement.
For AV distribution, ISU deployed an Extron DTP CrossPoint 108 4K matrix switcher to route video from gameplay stations, the coaching area and the shoutcaster booth. Extron DTP HDMI 4K transmitters and receivers extend HDMI signals to displays throughout the lab, allowing operators to switch between sources and send content to different screens.
Users manage the AV system through an Extron TLP Pro 1025T 10-inch tabletop touchpanel and IPCP Pro 360Q xi control processor. The interface provides control over AV sources, routing configurations and room presets. ISU also chose Extron because the university already used its technology in other event spaces, which helped simplify programming and support.
“We wanted something that was easy to use, almost does the work itself,” said Nick Aballi, distance learning technology specialist at Indiana State University. “You fire the Extron gear up, it’s already set to a baseline for the room, choose your sources, hit enter, and it does the switching. It keeps everything very simple.”
