Blackmagic Design announced the Blackmagic PYXIS 12K, a digital film camera featuring a 12K RGBW sensor in the company’s compact PYXIS body design. The camera uses the same sensor as the URSA Cine 12K LF, offering 16 stops of dynamic range, dual CFexpress media recorders, 10G Ethernet, and Blackmagic Cloud global sync in a customizable form factor.
Available in L-Mount, PL, or locking EF lens versions, the Blackmagic PYXIS 12K will begin shipping in July through Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide for $4,995.
The body is made from CNC-machined aerospace aluminum and features multiple mounting points and accessory side plates. The native resolution is 6048 x 4032 or 12288 x 8040, and the PYXIS 12K supports frame rates up to 112 fps. Its large-format sensor allows users to shoot in full 6:5 anamorphic without the need to crop.
Customers can shoot in standard resolutions and frame rates ranging from HD to DCI 4K, 6K, 8K, and 12K. The multi-scale sensor allows recording in 12K, 8K, or 4K at full sensor size. Supported frame rates include:
- 40 fps at 12288 x 8040 (3:2 open gate)
- 60 fps at 12288 x 5112 (2.4:1)
- 112 fps at 4096 x 2160 (4K)
- 36 fps at 6048 x 4032 (3:2 open gate, 6K model)
- 60 fps at 4096 x 2160 (4K DCI, 6K model)
The PYXIS records an HD proxy in H.264 alongside the camera original files. Proxy files can be uploaded to Blackmagic Cloud in real time. To connect to the internet via mobile data, users can plug an Apple or Android phone into the USB-C port, and the camera will automatically configure the connection.
Customers can also connect via wired Ethernet using the camera’s Ethernet port.
