Sony has introduced the FX5, a new full-frame Cinema Line camera designed for professional filmmakers and video creators. The camera features a newly developed fully stacked CMOS image sensor and adds several firsts for the FX series, including Open Gate recording and internal X-OCN RAW recording.
The FX5 supports recording in 5K at up to 60 frames per second, 4K at up to 120 frames per second and Full HD at up to 240 frames per second. According to Sony, the camera also delivers more than 15 stops of dynamic range, three base ISO settings and a Dual Gain Shooting mode to improve image quality across a range of lighting conditions.
Additional features include AI-powered autofocus with subject recognition and Real-time Tracking, 5-axis in-body image stabilization, a new menu system and support for Sony’s Monitor & Control app for remote monitoring and camera control. The compact camera is also compatible with a new detachable OLED viewfinder and an optional XLR handle unit that supports four-channel audio recording at up to 96 kHz, 32-bit float.
The Sony FX5 is available for preorder beginning July 22 and is scheduled to ship in August. Sony also announced updates to its Monitor & Control and Catalyst Prepare applications, along with a planned Version 2.0 camera update that will add additional recording and workflow features.
