University College Birmingham has deployed Catchbox Plus wireless microphone systems to improve lecture capture and classroom audio across its nine campuses. The university replaced fixed lectern microphones, which limited instructors’ mobility and affected recorded lectures, with wearable Clip microphones and throwable Cube microphones for audience participation.
The university’s AV team selected the system after evaluating options and testing a demo unit. Four Catchbox Plus systems are currently in use, with seven additional systems planned. According to AV Lead Mike Fox, the Clip solved the university’s lecture capture problem by allowing lecturers to move freely while wearing a wireless microphone.
The Catchbox Hub’s built-in DSP eliminated the need for separate signal processing hardware in hybrid classrooms, while features such as a range alarm and custom branding help staff track equipment and reduce misplaced microphones. Fox said the system has simplified deployments by reducing the amount of additional equipment required.
Beyond classrooms, University College Birmingham also uses Catchbox in larger event spaces and lecture theaters for guest speakers, assemblies and commercial venue rentals. “The introduction of Catchbox Plus has been transformative,” a sixth-form representative said, adding that the system has improved participation and helped create a more inclusive environment for students and visitors.
